Burberry Prorsum at London Fashion Week

The talented, and I have to say handsome, Christopher Bailey has continued to impress me more and more each season. I love how this collection walks the line between classically chic and youthful while never making me think its trying too hard to be one or the other.

I was instantly drawn in by the rich, earthy colors. They ranged from the most organic olives and tans to the richest berries and plums to icy cool greys with the rouge pop of cobalt and mustard.

Most of the looks consisted of one color (in varying tones) from head to toe but interest was created with some of the most lavish textures that I've ever seen. I was completely taken with the mix of untamed furs, rich velvets and ruched skirts and dresses. I wanted to touch everything!!

PS. To all you girls that invested in over the knee boots last fall.... they're here for another season!

Lazy Sunday Recommended Reading...

Anyone who has been to my house knows that I am a bit of a collector of style/ fashion books and my recent favorite is "I Love Your Style" by Amanda Brooks.

Brooks, a fashion world mainstay, penned a lovely guide to cultivating a personal style. Don't be put off, this is neither a manual of rigorous 'do's' and 'don'ts', nor a guide to dressing like Brooks herself. This book is full of words of encouragement and light-handed guidance from someone who feels like the reader's style savvy big sister. It is also overflowing with amazing images of fashionable icons from Jane Birkin to Kate Moss, from Brigitte Bardot to Chloe Sevigny. Brooks not only encourages her reader to experiment with fashion but share in her deep love of it.

Pick it up and get lost for a bit...

FW f/w 10/11 part 6..

3.1 Philip Lim is the show that I've been waiting for all week and I can honestly say it lived up to my expectations....

The collection was peppered with structured peices juxtaposed with softer, equally glamorous ones...

The perfect example was this sleek suspendered pencil skirt coupled with an almost slouchy sequined top. It feels like Jerry Hall at Studio 54 crossed with a Dior-clad 50's starlet.

Do I actually have to explain why I adore this jacket? And get a look at those shoes! They came down the runway with quite a few of the looks and, for me, they are the stand-out footwear of the season...

The contrast in elements continues with this etherial dress shown under a very unique little leather vest.

Thouroughly modern and remarkably classic...

I think there's a trend about to happen with these metallic blazers... I swooned over a very similar look shown a few days ago by Erin Featherston.

This icy grey is so lovely.... and of course the bag :)

FW f/w 10/11 part 5

Things at Marc by Marc Jacobs had a very 90's feel this season, at least in my opinion. I saw something in the looks that was distinctively grunge flavored (a look that Jacobs himself brought to the fashion forefront) along side military jackets and army surplus accessories. My standouts are the two-tone denim dress and the men's look that was so brit-pop that I'm reaching for a Blur album as we speak...

Inspired by....

Clockwise from top left:
1. Lily Aldridge's stunning hair color... I've vowed to make it my own by summer
2. Nico-Chelsea Girl... She's been rattling about in my mind since seeing the Erin Featherston show
3.Braids... I'm loving this trend for the warm months
4. Massive Attack-Heligoland... Been listening to it while relaxing with my bf, we're big fans and this album is pretty fantastic
5.MAC lipstick in Girl About Town... my signature shade for spring :)

FW f/w 10/11 part 4..

It may be a tad early to say for sure but I can say with some confidence that Erin Featherston may be my favorite show of Fashion Week!

Featherston stepped a bit outside of her box with this collection and I love her for it :)
For those who aren't familiar, her look is usually whimsical and very feminine. She always produces frothy, frilly party dresses that make women look like high-fashion fairy princesses. I've always loved Featherston's strong aesthetic but it was never my personal taste seeing as I'm not much of a girlie girl when it comes to my clothes.

But these dresses really did it for me. I adored the clean, boho silhouette in that cheerful tangerine as well as the super fun metallic mini...

... but this one really rocked my world with it effortless sexiness. The flattering cut, the sheer patterned overlay, the hint of shimmer.... where do I begin?
If there is one thing to know about me it is that I LOVE blazers... and these really surprised me. They're so rocker chic in cool metallics with slim lapels and I particularly love the printed secretary blouse under the gold jacket.....

I can't write about this show without touching on the hair. I love the humorous touch of having all the models sporting heavy bangs, which is of course, the signature look of Erin Featherston herself (and sited influence for the collection Nico). As a fellow wearer of a strong fringe, I have to say I love it !

Fashion Week f/w 10/11 Part 3....

The verdict is in....

Those people at Helmut Lang make clothes that make me want to shoplift.

Steal of the Day!

My own personal steal of the day is this great ebay find...
For the past year or so I've been collecting vintage jewelry by Monet. Its well-made, usually affordable costume jewelry that always looks fresh and relevant when paired with my anything in my closet.... $11.50!!! I win!
Let this serve as a reminder that with a little patience you can find a steal almost anywhere :)

More Fashion Week!

A few of my favorites from last night and today...
Jenni Kayne- I love the structured femininity of her collection, the darling, adorably cut little dress in leather (at least it appears to be leather) is my favorite kind of contradiction. And quite frankly as someone with curves, I must say that I love seeing leather used in a soft, drapey way.....
Charlotte Ronson- Always a personal favorite, her clothes always have an accessible, everyday feel.... and her I Heart Ronson collection at JC Penny is the source of some of my most loved pieces in my closet :) hooray for cheap, well designed fashion!

FASHION WEEK!!

I'd be lying if I said I didn't come home each evening during Mercades-Benz Fashion Week and start trolling the web for the lastest offerings from America's best designers.... cause that's exactly what I do.....

My stand out favorite so far is Vena Cava. These ladies put together full looks that evoke a very particular feeling and mood but that can be broken down into peices I could imagine in my own wardrobe...
Amazing little dress that I could picture as the ideal topper to my favorite leggings...
Adore the print on the top, just wanna tuck it into a snug little black skirt and go out to dinner.. (perhaps tapas?)

Snowed in at Tiffany's...

This is what happens when record snowfall hits Charm City...

Upon viewing the Audrey Hepburn classic "Breakfast at Tiffany's" for the millionth time, I was struck (like everyone else with an awareness of fashion) by the timeless elegence of the clothes..

The iconic image above is so much a part of the pop culture landscape that I think I have overlooked how stunning the look actually is. Any high caliber movie star could saunter down the red carpet in one of these elegent Hubert de Givenchy peices and look as relevent as Hepburn did almost 50 years ago....

The silhouetes are simple and the tailoring impeccable, but there is some indefinable element that makes the whole thing feel modern and never fussy. I think back to the way that Holly Golightly throws herself together while dashing off for her weekly visit to Sing Sing. It all comes together effortlessly.. Which is perhaps the key to having that thing known as "style"... never making it look like work.

And how have we overlooked the dashing George Peppard for so long?
His clothes in the film are as spot on as those of Ms. Golightly.... The clean lines, the skinny ties, the trim cardigans... any of these peices (with some slight alterations) would look hip and modern on any fashionable guy from Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Justin Timberlake....
In one early scene in the film, Paul enters the apartment building in a crisp white shirt, thin black tie, and a heather grey cardigan with a deep v-neck and I could imagine my own boyfriend appearing at home in that same look...

If nothing else, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" serves as a reminder that classic good taste NEVER goes out of style...

Great Minds Think Alike!

Take a second to check out one of my absolute favorite fashion blogs WhoWhatWhere.com .... They posted a great bit today about army jackets featuring some gorgeous options and, seeing as army jackets were the topic of my last post, I couldn't resist passing the info along :)

May I Suggest...

The Inspiration:

I have been beyond obsessed with this look from Balmain since it starting popping up not only on the editorial pages of magazines but as a clear inspiration for a lot of the early spring street wear looks that I'm noticing. I thought it may be fun to put together my own "on the cheap" alternative...
While the tattered brilliance and piled on hardware give the runway look an amazing edge, I'm aiming for something a little more 'everyday'....

American Apparel Shiny Legging-$46

A fun stand-in for faux leather pants/leggings and a versatile part of my own wardrobe..

American Apparel Unisex Fine Jersey V-neck-$19

I, like most of the people I know, have about a billion of these AA tees in their closet at home. I went with this particular tee (in Melange Green) because the cut is a bit relaxed and the color will pop a little against the muted shade of the jacket (below). I personally like my top a little long if I'm wearing leggings in place of pants, just a preference... PS the more you wash this shirt, the softer and more comfy it gets. After you're over playing with this look, you'll have a basic that will last for years ..

Forever 21 A-Ten-Hut Military Jacket-$24.80

This jacket captures the military/nautical vibe of the Balmain without the elements that make it too much for everyday wear (no exaggerated Balmain shoulders, no over indulgent embellishments) .. I got a very similar one a few years ago at Target and I find that I pull it out of my closet at least a few times every spring..

Add a military inspired brooch like this antique (super easy to find online or in an antique shop)

Add a jumble of necklaces, pair with the obligatory chunky black ankle boots and GO!

Blizzard Reading

This is a suprisingly good read for anyone (adults included) with an interest in fashion. As a hairstylist with an interest in editorial work, I was particularly in love with the interview with Guido Palau and the amazing tips from other BIG time hair/make-up magicians :)

Things I think are more interesting than the super bowl..

1. The always intriguing Lou Doillon. If I could be someone else for a day, I'd be her (she's got my three favorite F's... she's French and Fucking Fabulous) 2. A new eye color quad from MAC's Spring Colour Forecast Collection, I'm loving the gold/amber collection 3. House Of Harlow 1960 Pearl Peeptoe Pump by Nicole Richie.. the new shoe collection is as amazing as the jewelry line it accompanies..

Want it now... Need it like a hole in the head

I spotted this jacket in the mall a few days ago and thought that perhaps it would satiate my lust for the little Givenchy number that I'll never own...

The Limited- imagine it open over a white v-neck with black skinny pants..

could do the trick? right?
